Here’s what’s on the horizon:

August 2024

  • Minnesota Pregnancy and Parenting Leave Law enhancements effective August 1.

October 2024

  • Maryland pay transparency requirements effective October 1.

January 2025

  • Connecticut expands paid sick leave eligibility effective January 1.
  • Delaware paid family and medical leave law contributions expected to begin January 1.
  • Illinois Equal Pay Act amendment effective January 1.
  • Maine paid family and medical leave program effective January 1.
  • New York mandates paid prenatal leave effective January 1.
  • Minnesota pay transparency requirements effective January 1.
  • Rhode Island enhances its Temporary Caregiver Insurance (TCI) program effective January 1.
  • Washington expands paid sick leave law effective January 1.

February 2025

  • Michigan paid sick leave expansion effective February 21.

July 2025

  • New Hampshire accommodations for nursing mothers effective July 1.
  • Maryland paid family and medical leave contributions begin July 1.
  • New York repeals COVID-19 leave provisions July 31.

2026

  • Connecticut further expands paid sick leave eligibility effective January 1.
  • Delaware paid family and medical leave benefits begin January 1.
  • Maine paid family and medical leave benefits available January 1.
  • Minnesota paid family leave contributions begin January 1.
  • Maryland paid family and medical leave benefits begin July 1.

2027

  • Connecticut paid sick leave law covers all employees effective January 1.

July 2024

  • California workplace violence prevention plans must be in place by July 1.
  • Connecticut employers will no longer be required to provide voting leave, starting July 1.
  • New York City Department of Consumer and Worker Protection "Know Your Rights at Work" poster requirements must be implemented by July 1.
  • Chicago Paid Leave and Paid Sick and Safe Leave Ordinance effective July 1.
  • Colorado prohibits requiring applicant’s age, date of birth or graduation date on job application effective July 1.
  • Minnesota paid leave law quarterly reports start July 1.
  • Updates to Oregon Family Leave Act and Paid Leave Oregon effective July 1.

What to Watch:

On July 31, Michigan’s Supreme Court reinstated Michigan’s original (2018) voter-initiated versions of the Improved Workforce Opportunity Wage Act (IWOWA) and the Earned Sick Time Act (ESTA), effectively expanding paid sick leave available to eligible employees and increasing Michigan’s minimum wage rate to $12 per hour on February 21, 2025.
