Thompson Hine Launches Innovative Generative AI Platform

Thompson Hine LLP

Thompson Hine, a leading law firm known for being an innovation trailblazer, recently introduced generative AI capabilities for large-scale contract analytics in partnership with Litera and its Kira software platform.

This strategic collaboration marks a significant milestone in the legal industry as Thompson Hine becomes the first law firm to introduce Kira’s latest generative AI-powered feature, Smart Summaries, to its lawyers and clients.

This new platform is the latest of the cutting-edge tools and systems the firm is employing to advance its consistent and constant innovation. Firm lawyers will now leverage the power of generative AI to automatically generate first drafts of clause summaries for subsequent review and tailoring.

The firm, which has been using Kira’s AI-powered contract review and analysis platform to deliver high-quality, cost-effective document review for its clients, worked with Litera to integrate Kira with OpenAI’s GPT-3.5 large language model in the firm’s private, secure Microsoft Azure cloud. The result is a solution that delivers on the promise of generative AI while meeting the firm’s and its clients’ high standards of data privacy and cybersecurity – all accomplished in record time.

Key benefits of this transformative capability include:

1. Enhanced lawyer productivity: The firm can now analyze contracts with increased speed and accuracy, further reducing the time and resources traditionally required for such tasks. Lawyers can focus more on providing strategic legal counsel and less on reviewing documents and the repetitive parts of drafting.

2. Enterprise-level data security: With the integration of an enterprise-level private instance of a generative AI model, the firm protects client documents and other sensitive information from inadvertent or malicious exposure that could result from the use of consumer-grade generative AI tools. Importantly, the firm also was granted an exception by Microsoft for content monitoring and filtering that disallows third-party reviewers from potentially reviewing sensitive data.

Bill Garcia, Thompson Hine’s Chief Practice Innovation Officer, expressed enthusiasm for this groundbreaking partnership, stating, “We are incredibly excited about our continued partnership with Litera and the integration of Kira Smart Summaries with an OpenAI model. This innovative solution allows us to better serve our clients by expanding our robust, cost-effective contract review process while maintaining enhanced data security. This initiative underscores our firm’s unwavering commitment to always innovating and staying at the forefront of legal technology.”

The firm’s dedication to innovation and its ability to rapidly adapt to cutting-edge technology continue to set it apart. The introduction of this generative AI capability represents yet another significant step forward in its dedication to delivering exceptional legal services, reinforcing its position as an industry leader.

Joey Benedek, Litera’s Vice President of Product Management, added, “We are thrilled that Thompson Hine remains a valued partner and is at the forefront of advancing our work in generative AI. We see great value in the practical application of these large language models to our existing products and lawyers’ everyday workflows, and we are excited to see how Thompson Hine uses these solutions to grow its business and better serve clients.” Thompson Hine is committed to staying on top of significant business trends and continuously innovating to meet clients’ evolving needs.
