David is a registered patent attorney and a member of the firm's Intellectual Property Prosecution, Transactions & Portfolio Management practice group. He counsels clients on an array of patent, copyright, and internet technology-related issues, helping them to manage, protect, and grow their IP assets.
David practices all aspects of patent law, including patent preparation and prosecution; foreign and domestic patent prosecution; ex parte reexamination, inter partes review, and post-grant review before the USPTO; patent infringement litigation; and the preparation of freedom to operate, non-infringement, and invalidity opinions. David also has a significant copyright practice, including copyright registration, software license compliance (including open source licenses such as the Apache, Creative Commons, GPL, LPGL, and Mozilla licenses), software audit support and negotiation services, and compliance with the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. David’s internet technology-related practice otherwise includes domain name registration and cybersquatting defense, preparation of terms of service and negotiation of service level agreements, and advice concerning the Communications Decency Act (Telecommunications Act of 1996).
David is admitted to practice in Ohio, Illinois, and the United States Patent and Trademark Office, as well as the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois. Prior to joining Thompson Hine, David was an associate at Fitch, Even, Tabin & Flannery in Chicago.
