Thompson Hine Shortlisted for Financial Times Innovative Lawyers Awards North America

Thompson Hine LLP

Thompson Hine, a national law firm and recognized leader in innovative solutions, has once again been recognized for innovation by the Financial Times Innovative Lawyers Awards North America, specifically in the “Innovation in Digitising Legal Practice” category for its game-changing approach to employee stock ownership plans (ESOPs). Winners will be announced at an awards ceremony in New York on December 9, 2024.

FT Innovative Lawyers previously recognized Thompson Hine as the number one law firm in the "Most Innovative North American Law Firms: New Working Models” category for its innovative legal service delivery model, SmartPaTH®.

Understanding that ESOPs’ size and complexity can create cumbersome, manual and more costly procedural components to remain price and service competitive, Thompson Hine set out to enhance the efficiency of the firm’s ESOP transaction offerings, including reducing billed hours, by leveraging tools to analyze existing corporate contractual obligations and digitally streamline the ESOP review and signing process.

The firm has a longstanding commitment to investing in and refining its ability to deploy technologies to support high-volume, complex transactions, including those leveraging the latest advancements in artificial intelligence. In response to emerging challenges, the firm revamped its ESOP workflow, seamlessly integrating multiple tools in a more strategic, efficient and streamlined process.

This innovative approach reduced the time required to negotiate ESOP formation documents and facilitate closings by nearly 50%, further cementing Thompson Hine’s position as the go-to advisor for investment bankers and trustees seeking representation in complex ESOP implementation transactions.

The new ESOP workflow was one of three finalists for Legalweek’s Tech-Enabled Transactional Practice of the Year award earlier this year, and it was recently shortlisted by The American Lawyer’s industry awards in the “Best Use of Technology” category, with winners to be announced November 13, 2024.

The FT Innovative Lawyers Awards celebrate the most impactful innovations from law firms and in-house legal teams across North America. With over 15 categories, the awards recognize leaders in digital innovation, strategic advice, talent management and efforts to drive positive change within the legal profession.
